There’s a new big fish in town.
Justin Khoy said he was proud to bring one of Ontario’s largest fish and chip franchises to ߲ݴýand said things are going well so far.
Halibut House opened on Oct. 9 at 702 Woolwich St. “So far so good,” said Khoy. “A lot of people have come to support us.”
He said the top-selling meal is the halibut and chips and customers are enjoying the haddock and cod, too. “They’re different,” said Khoy. “The halibut is juicier with less fishy taste; haddock tastes more like fish and cod is in the middle.”
Halibut House offers traditional fish and chip lunches and dinners but also serves breakfast. They run breakfast from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with lunch starting at 11 a.m. The restaurant is open until 9 p.m. Two sizes of fish and chips are available from 11 a.m., in case you want a smaller meal later in the day.
Khoy, who lives in Pickering with his family, said he had been looking for a place in ߲ݴýfor a long time. He owns two other locations and has worked at more. “We tried to find an opening in ߲ݴýfor so many years, but it was hard to find a location,” he said.
Khoy said the brand-new building between Tim Hortons and the Beer Store was perfect for them. There is a lot of traffic and pedestrians and the restaurant is directly across from Riverside Park.
Khoy and his wife, Bella, have two kids and he loves when they can bring them to the park with his parents to enjoy the scenery in Guelph. He moved to Canada from Cambodia in 2009 and his parents followed afterwards to be here with him.
Khoy and his wife said this restaurant will be their new baby for a while and they plan to spend a lot of time in Guelph. He said he opened his first location in 2014. “It’s been 10 years now and I’m so grateful for the opportunity with Halibut House,” Khoy said.
There is a lot to like about running this business. “It’s very unique and special,” he said. “When I cook breakfast in the open kitchen like this, a lot of customers come and say ‘Hi Justin, have a good day or goodbye’ and I love it.”
The staff put in a lot of work, especially chopping up the big bags of fresh potatoes, but they also enjoy the food themselves and the customers are coming back for more.
“A lot of regular customers come in and we know their order,” said Khoy. “We have one that comes every morning already. Some people have returned two or three times.”
He said he loves the area and the community here and hopes to be frying up fish for a long time.
“We’re going to run a promotion again in November until December. Every fish and chip, we donate $1 to ,” Khoy said.
He said they also have weekly specials on Sundays and Mondays for haddock and chips, a big portion for $12.99 and Wednesdays is cod and chips for $12.99.
“Come and give us a try,” said Khoy.
For now, customers can order to eat in the restaurant or pick up food to take away, but there isn’t delivery yet. For more about Halibut House restaurants, visit .
