An occasional roundup of unusual incidents reported by the Ontario Provincial Police:
A 74-year-old man was charged in a road rage incident.
Police were called last month to a disturbance in Huntsville.
The man approached the driver of a disabled transport truck, OPP said. He struck the driver several times.
A local man was charged with assault and making death threats.
Looking for Spider-Man
OPP had a bit of fun with a headline on a news release.
“My Spidey senses are telling me that someone in town will know this individual,” they wrote.
A man dressed in a Spider-Man costume stole items last month from a Shoppers Drug Mart in Orangeville.
OPP included a photo of the thief — his face is fully visible — in hopes that someone would recognize him.
Common target
More proof that LCBO stores might be the No. 1 target for Ontario thieves.
While investigating a theft last month at a Midland LCBO, an officer saw another shoplifter leave without paying for several bottles of booze.
The officer arrested a local man, 42. He’s charged with shoplifting and possession of stolen goods.
Driving school charged
Do as I say, not as I do.
Officers running an enforcement blitz last month on Airport Road in Caledon East, north of Brampton, stopped 32 commercial vehicles.
Police laid more than 30 Highway Traffic Act charges.
“Most notably, a transport truck from a truck driving school was found to have no current inspection completed and other various deficiencies in the required documentation for the vehicle,” OPP said.
“Both the driver and the school were charged.”
Catch me if you can
The 17-year-old driver of a car that plunged into the Otonabee River near Peterborough did not want to be found.
Another motorist told police last month they saw debris from a crash on County Road 32 and the car partially submerged in the river.
“They called out but did not get any response,” OPP said. “The caller advised they could see footprints coming up from the shoreline.”
Police found the car in the river. The side windows were open and the airbags had deployed. The driver was not there.
“Officers conducted patrols of the area and eventually contacted the driver by phone,” OPP said. “The driver stated they had struck black ice, causing them to hit a tree and then enter the river.”
The teen escaped the car and got a ride. He would not give his location.
“Officers determined where they were and attended an address in Lakefield,” OPP said.
Police said he smelled of alcohol. A breath sample revealed he had been drinking but was still within the legal driving limit.
A Peterborough teen was issued a three-day driving suspension. He was charged with careless driving, being a novice driver with a blood-alcohol level above zero, failing to report an accident and failing to remain.
Two nabbed
Police got two for the price of one.
A member of the public called OPP last month to report a possible impaired driver in Waubaushene, northwest of Orillia.
Police found a car parked beside another car.
Both drivers — a man, 36, of South Glengarry Township and a woman, 31, of Williamstown — were charged with impaired driving.
Snowmobile hits barn, van
A man faces a drunk driving charge after crashing his snowmobile into a barn and a parked van.
The snowmobile caught fire after crashing last month northeast of Collingwood. The operator fled, but police followed footprints in the snow to a nearby house.
“At the residence, officers spoke with an individual and determined that they had been operating the snowmobile,” OPP said.
A local man, 43, was charged with refusing to provide a breath sample to police.
Driver locked doors, drank booze
A man faces almost a dozen charges after refusing to stop for police.
Police saw the driver of a Mercedes Sprinter van commit a traffic violation last month in Collingwood.
“The driver then began displaying possible signs of impairment by being unable to maintain its lane,” OPP said.
Police tried to stop the van, but it took off. Shortly after, it was spotted in a parking lot.
“As officers approached the motor vehicle, the male driver locked the doors, refused to exit the vehicle and began consuming alcohol,” police said.
A Buckhorn man, 50, was arrested and charged with a host of charges, including impaired driving, fleeing police and driving without insurance.
