Eggnog and gingerbread are classic festive treats — and usually only sold when the holiday season is in full swing.Â
Statistics Canada published some sweet data that provides insight into how much Canadians consume these festive treats.Â
Just how much gingerbread did Canada import?
Gingerbread is typically flavoured with ginger, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon, and is a popular holiday treat in Canada.
“While you can bake gingerbread at any time of year, many retail stores and bakeries only sell gingerbread during the winter holiday season,” Statistics Canada explains.
Here’s what the numbers tell us
In September 2024, Canada imported over $4.2 million worth of gingerbread (and the like), according to Statistics Canada.
“Imports of gingerbread from Italy accounted for more than half — $2.3 million — of the total imports, while imports from Germany accounted for about $1.1 million of total imports,” Statistics Canada reports.
In the months leading up to December, gingerbread imports are at their peak.
In 2023, Canada imported the most gingerbread in September ($5.2 million), October ($5.7 million), and November ($3.2 million).
In 2023 overall, Canada imported $17.7 million worth of gingerbread “and the like.” Imports in September, October and November accounted for 79.7 per cent ($14.1 million) of total annual imports.
Statistics Canada said their information provides insights on Canada’s gingerbread imports from the countries top trading partners for the period of September 2024.
However, a spokesperson said they don’t have information showing where Canada ranks on the volume of imports compared to the rest of the world.
How much eggnog do Canadians buy and produce?
From May to August every year, virtually no eggnog is made or available in Canada, Statistics Canada reports.Â
Production of the festive favourite begins ramping up in September and peaks in December — just in time for prime eggnog drinking season, the national statistical office explains.
In 2023, Statistics Canada reports eggnog sales rose from 843 kilolitres in September to peak at 5,117 kilolitres in December.
“A small run of eggnog is also produced for the Easter holidays,” Statistics Canada says.
