Rain, rain and more rain is in the forecast for most of southern Ontario this weekend, so it could be a bit slippery walking the dog or driving.
“The regions in southwestern Ontario are expecting more rain, plus the GTA, for the weekend — especially Saturday,” Barbara Lapido, an operational meteorologist with , said.
“There will be a break Saturday afternoon and it will be warming.”
How much rain will fall?
According to Lapido, forecasts are currently calling for 15-25 millimetres in southwestern Ontario and 20-30 millimetres in the GTA, with all of that rain expected to melt the accumulated snow.
“Moving to regions around Georgian Bay, we can have a mix of freezing rain, especially during Saturday. Then it will switch to rain and remain.”
Temperatures are expected to be higher than normal across most of the province this weekend.
“Eastern Ontario region will be in the negative temperatures still, but everywhere else will be above normal.”
Freezing rain warning
Where things may get more dicey is in the Ottawa Valley area, where there could be freezing rain all day Saturday, Lapido said.
“It will remain probably until Sunday morning, maybe it will switch to rain because temperatures will switch to 0 C.”
Freezing rain warnings were issued late Friday afternoon for some areas in eastern Ontario, including in the Ottawa Valley, calling for “patchy, light freezing rain beginning Saturday morning.”
The Environment Canada alert notes patchy, light freezing is expected to begin Saturday morning and end that afternoon as temperatures rise above the freezing mark.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery,” the alert warned, noting drivers should be prepared to adjust driving with changing road conditions.
When will temperatures return to seasonal norms?
When asked when temperatures are expected to return to what’s typically expected in late December, Lapido said they will start to drop Sunday.
“They will decrease day by day, so by Wednesday or Thursday, it will be more normal.”
Lapido recommends anyone travelling to check the Environment Canada website for conditions before you head out. Visit for the latest conditions.
