Ontarians have begun to receive their taxpayer rebate cheques — including some that have been issued to people who have died.
When asked if the province was aware taxpayer rebate cheques have been issued to those who are deceased and how that may have happened, an Ontario Ministry of Finance spokesperson confirmed the province is using the most recent tax data available, “as is standard practice for provincial and federal tax payments.”
To qualify for the rebate, you must have been 18 years or older and a resident in Ontario on Dec. 31, 2023, not be bankrupt or incarcerated in 2024 and have filed a 2023 Income Tax and Benefits Return by Dec. 31, 2024.

That means if a person died after filing their last tax return used by the province when issuing the rebates, they could still receive it.

When asked about who could cash a taxpayer rebate cheque issued to someone who is deceased, the ministry said rebate cheques can be cashed by the executor of the estate.
While processes at different financial institutions may vary, the ministry said that to cash the cheque for a deceased person, the estate representative would have to bring proof of death to a bank.
The ministry said anyone having issues cashing their cheques should contact their institution directly to identify and troubleshoot issues.
