Ontario residents have had a tease of some warmer spring weather, but will need to pack some patience as the season takes its time unfolding in the next few months.
At least, that’s the prediction according to The Weather Network meteorologists.
The company issued its on March 13, and predicts that skiers may still have some time on the hills. The spring equinox officially begins on March 20 at 5:01 a.m.
“We’ve already been teased by some pleasant springlike weather, but it looks like warmer temperatures won’t stick around just yet,” the company said. “In fact, the end of March and the first half of April could still bring a few parting punches from winter, especially in the northern parts of the province. However, this delay in consistent warmth will help extend the spring ski season.”
Spring 2025 weather outlook in Ontario
Much of central, eastern and northern Ontario still has a rather deep snowpack, especially across the snowbelts to the east of Georgian Bay and Lake Superior.
And as hills cling to their machine-groomed bases, some ski resorts are indeed extending the season past March break.
There may be some seasonably warm days to come, but winter isn’t over yet, and there will be a “see-saw” of warm-cold weather over the next few months.
That teeter-totter of weather will hopefully help keep the snowmelt, and flood warnings, in check, Rachel Modestino said.
Above-normal precipitation expected for southern Ontario
However, meteorologists are also predicting more precipitation than normal — especially through April — and this could cause delays in the start of the spring planting season.
”(It will be seen) all the way from Windsor and into Ottawa Valley. And the reason why is we’re looking at some cold and warm air battles, bringing an active storm track with Colorado and Texas lows, and those typically bring lots of moisture with them from the Gulf of Mexico,” she said. “We’re going to be quite wet for most of the spring.”
This weekend, rainfall is predicted across Ontario for Sunday, March 16, which is something to keep an eye on, she added.
“Our water levels are definitely going to be rising. The soil levels across southern Ontario — especially cottage country all the way over to Ottawa Valley — is saturated, and anything on top of that is adding insult to injury,” Modestino said.
However, we’re still not done with snowfall yet.
“Winter is definitely going to be dragging its feet into April. We’ll see that volatile pattern. We haven’t seen the last of snowfall either — especially across the snowbelt and eastern Ontario.”
When will warmer weather arrive?
Warmer weather will arrive toward the end of April, and beginning of May, with most people feeling an average springtime across the country.
That combination of snowmelt and the anticipated above-normal precipitation across this region could bring an elevated risk for flooding in areas that are prone to spring flooding.
However, this also means the risk for frost damage to blossoms will be lower than normal.
More reliable spring weather will arrive in May, with temperatures higher than seasonal across the province.
