Long before comics started being referred to as graphic novels, the medium had a few titans in North America to express the art form’s potential for adults. Robert Crumb was certainly in that mature-comics vanguard, but for all that, his childhood did much to mould him as an artist and is frequently detailed in his work.

In this excerpt from the biography “Crumb: A Cartoonist’s Life,” we catch up with a young Crumb after he moved across the country with mother Bea, brother Charles and the rest of his family from Oceanside, Calif. There, Robert had had some teeth knocked out by a thrown cinder block; more changes were to come in his new hometown in Delaware.
