Biography and memoir are always popular categories of non-fiction, but this week we’re seeing an unusually large number ranking in the top 10.
Seven of the top 10 titles on both the original non-fiction list and the Canadian list are life stories, several of them taking the form of essays.
New this week on the original list is “Sucker Punch,” by Scaachi Koul, . Koul, a senior writer with Slate, mines her Indian background, failed relationships and what it means to be a young woman today. Reviews usually include the words humorous and heartfelt. It debuts at No. 6 on the overall list and No. 3 on the Canadian list.
The other newcomer to the original list is “Do Not Cry When I Die,” a Holocaust memoir by Renee Salt, written with Kate Thompson. It debuts at No. 10.
Finally, “A Two-Spirit Journey” joins the Canadian list at No. 9. It is by Mae-Nee Chacaby, a lesbian Ojibwa-Cree elder, with a writing credit to Mary Louisa Plummer.
