The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is asking people to dispose of two brands of frozen pastries, due to potential salmonella contamination.
A April 19 for the Sweet Cream brand and D. Effe T. brand of frozen pastries, following one illness report.
The CFIA triggered the recall during its investigation into a food-borne illness outbreak.
The products were sold in Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec, and possibly other provinces. Along with being sold to the public, the products may also have been purchased by hotels, restaurants and institutions.
The pastries included a plain or chocolate-based product and sfogliata — an Italian puff pastry that looks like a shell or lobster tail.

What is salmonella?
salmonella is a bacteria that can be found in food, which causes diarrhea, fever and stomach pains.
Food contaminated with salmonella “may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick,” the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said in its recall notice. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
What to do if you have the recalled product?
First, check to see if you have the recalled product. If you bought a similar style product from a clerk and there isn’t a UPC code or lot number, then contact the store where you purchased it to double-check, or err with caution.
Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased, the CFIA said.
Pending the investigation, the CFIA may announce further recalls related to this case.
