These words could get you a high score at the Rotary Club of Guelph’s Scrabble party
The Rotary Club of ߲ݴýSouth is hosting a scrabble party at the ߲ݴýRoyal Canadian Legion on Saturday, April 12 in partnership with The Children’s Foundation Keep Kids Fed at Home and ߲ݴýGoGo Grandmothers (Stephen Lewis Foundation).
Are you an eager logophile who would enjoy playing Scrabble with a group? Now’s your chance to play the ultimate word game and give back to the community.
is hosting a Scrabble party at the ߲ݴýRoyal Canadian Legion, 57 Watson Pkwy S., from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. Its partners, and (Stephen Lewis Foundation) are excited to help with their “FUNdraising” event and help local and global initiatives.
Rotarian Celia Clark said the event costs only $25 per player, and all the money raised will be split between the charities.

“It’s for anyone who likes playing Scrabble or would like to try playing Scrabble in a fun, friendly, collaborative way,” she said.
Clark explained this tournament is a team effort, with tables of four trying to get the top score together. The hosts have more than 40 game boards and all the corresponding tiles. You pick your letters and create your words, as you usually would, but you don’t compete with players at your game.

“You’re working together to get the maximum possible score for the whole table,” Clark said. “You try to get those double and triple word scores, and that’s where working together makes it much more fun.”
There will be prizes for the best team name, the highest scoring team, and there will also be a door prize.

Teams played Scrabble last year at the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre. This year the Scrabble party will be at the ߲ݴýRoyal Canadian Legion.

“There are several words that you wouldn’t normally be able to use, proper nouns like ߲ݴýand Africa, but if you get those or any of the words on the program, then you put your hand up and holler and you get a prize, like amazing chocolates from P.E.I.,” Clark said.
Keep Kids Fed at Home and ߲ݴýGoGo Grandmothers for Africa will each have market tables and a silent auction at the event to support their own causes.
Keep Kids Fed at Home is a program that provides take-home packages of food to kids in the community, so they have some nutritious choices. They are referred directly from their schools and take the bags home for the weekend.
߲ݴýGoGo Grandmothers for Africa raises funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and raises awareness about the needs of grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa. They deliver funds to grassroots and community-led organizations who are leading the response to HIV and AIDS.
Clark said the Rotary Group of ߲ݴýSouth is “moving toward or encompassing more of a partnership model,” and is working with charities to maximize their impact on the community.
She said lots of people are buying tickets to this event in groups of four, so if you have a team you want to play with, you can come together, but if you want to join others and buy just one or two tickets you are welcome to do that too.

She encourages everyone to buy their tickets in advance, and said it’s easy to get them online at . The deadline is Thursday, April 10 to get tickets there.
