There’s nothing like light shining through a colourful Turkish lamp. These statement pieces can be kept in any room of your home or given as special gifts.
Traditionally, the mosaic lights and lanterns can symbolize personal enlightenment or even protection from negative energy or the “evil eye.” Many people just love their unique beauty.

Artist and instructor Catherine Robertson is holding Turkish lamp-making classes in her Elanne & Ivy studio for small groups, but also hosts bigger workshops in people’s homes or event spaces.
“I do this for myself, and I love what I do,” she said. “I love teaching this.”

Her workshops are around two hours in length, but sometimes people stay to chat longer and plan to come back again. The classes are suggested for ages 10 and up and Robertson can host up to four people at a time in her “tiny” studio.
“It brings people together,” Robertson said. “People come here and meet others they connect with and it’s like a community now.”

She has had the opportunity to teach more than 600 students and has made hundreds of lamps herself. Robertson is also a jewelry maker who creates many pieces from glass and loves to coach others in crafting. She said her classes are more personal, and more reasonably priced than others.
“And I’m right here teaching and helping them, every step of the way,” Robertson said.
She also experiments and sometimes does things a little differently for her own lamps.
“I cut and fuse glass here and incorporate rainbow jewels and round stone-like pieces. I taught myself and just started doing things I had never seen before,” she said.

Typically, the mosaics are made by creating patterns from small tiles of coloured glass and other areas are filled with glass beads. This is the creative process she walks students through, and they can make any pattern they want and combine different colours. They can also choose from a selection of different styles of lamp. Plaster is added to the lamp a few days after the student takes it home.

“You cannot possibly have two identical lamps,” Robertson said. “Everyone’s patterns and beadwork are different. I think people like that. It’s not like a paint night party where you go and make the same painting then throw it out. You create a beautiful lamp to keep forever.”

During the month of April, you can make a swan-necked lamp for $100, which is $40 off the regular price. Robertson usually holds her classes on weekends but is flexible with times and days.
Robertson said she has families, couples on special dates, and lots of friends come to her studio. She has travelled all over the area teaching and holding events. She even taught a wedding party for a special bridal shower. Her repeat customers love to make lamps for others.
