Ontario residents looking for some of their favourite reality shows may have to turn to a streaming service now that MTV Canada is officially off the air.
Back in October, a the channel was ending service on Dec. 31, citing “changing audiences” on specialty TV.

MTV Canada was known for carrying shows like The Challenge, Ridiculousness, Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, Teen Mom, Catfish, Ex on the Beach, Siesta Key, and more. Many of these shows are still available on and .
On social media platform X on Wednesday Jan. 1, one user called the network’s signature shows “staples of my adolescence.”
A brief history
MTV Canada traces its roots to Sept. 1, 2000, when Baton Broadcasting launched talktv. The channel carried repeats of CTV talk shows and later featured future network stars like Ben Mulroney, Seamus O’Regan and Craig Norris.
On Sept. 28, 2005, CTV and MTV networks a strategic alliance to grow the MTV brand in Canada. The initiative included a rebrand of talktv into a Canadian programmed and managed MTV channel, featuring interactive, lifestyle, talk and documentary shows.
MTV Canada became a go-to source for reality shows. It also launched its flagship show, “MTV Live,” soon thereafter.
While the station has faded into the annals of TV history, several of its former stars continue to resonate in the Canadian media landscape.
Here’s a look at a few of them.
Daniel Levy
Before he gained international acclaim as David Rose on CBC’s hit comedy series, “Schitt’s Creek,” got his big break as an on-air host for MTV Canada’s “MTV Live” (2006 to 2012) and “The After Show.” The latter was a talk show-styled program that aired after MTV reality shows like “The Hills.”
When “MTV Live” ran its course, Levy pursued acting roles and teamed up with his father, Eugene and uncle, Fred, to form “Not a Real Production Company,” which created a pilot for “Schitt’s Creek.” In 2017, he began hosting “The Great Canadian Baking Show.”
Jessi Cruickshank
Canadian media personality Jessi Cruickshank was one of the original seven co-hosts of “MTV Live” in 2006.
She is the former co-host of MTV Canada’s “The After Show” and its variations, including “The Hills: The After Show” and “The City: Live After Show” with co-host Dan Levy.
On , Cruickshank hosted “Canada’s Smartest Person” and “The Goods.”
Cruikshank is known for her self-deprecating humour, as seen in her web series.
Her flair for fashion has also made her a fan favourite.
Cruickshank has also hosted “Live from E!,’ and “Jerseylicious.”
She was the Los Angeles correspondent for six seasons on Canada’s top-rated entertainment show, “etalk.” Cruickshank has also travelled the globe as a keynote speaker and Canadian ambassador for Free the Children.
Daryn Jones
A professional standup comedian since the age of 17, Daryn Jones cowrote and co-starred in “The Buzz” which ran for seven seasons on the Comedy Network. From there, he appeared on CBC’s “The Rick Mercer Report.”
From 2006 to 2012, Jones served as the creative producer of MTV Canada’s award-winning show, “MTV Live.”
He’s currently co-host of the Virgin Radio Toronto’s morning drive show with Deepa Prashad on 99.9.
Jones’ talent agency, , said he has built a career pushing comedy right to the edge.
He’s described as “a gifted improviser with a talent for making absurd situations relatable.”
Nicole Holness
Nicole Holness is known for appearances on MTV Live (2006-2012), MTV Creeps and MTV Showdown. Holness is also an R&B singer, also known as X-Quisite.
As an , Holness visited Mississauga to speak to students about the dangers of sexually-transmitted infections like HIV and AIDS.
