Canada loses to Czechia
After another disappointing and early exit at the hands of Czechia losing 4-3 in the dying seconds of the Jan. 2 quarterfinal game, Team Canada has bowed out of the IIHF World Junior Championship tournament without a medal for a second consecutive year.
Team Canada at the World Juniors
Having started the campaign with question marks surrounding the makeup of the roster and controversy about the selection of the coaching staff, it seemed the team never really quite got to the level and standard that fans and players alike have grown accustom to.
Although they began the tournament with a statement 4-0 blanking over Finland, a lack of consistency and discipline in the games to follow was ultimately too much to overcome. Team Canada scored at a lower rate per game than previous years, with fingers being pointed at the talent that was left at home this time around.
The tournament would end on a questionable call with just over two minutes left to play in a tied quarterfinal, but some would argue that they never should’ve gotten to the point of living and dying by a controversial call on home ice. For a second straight year, Team Canada fell short to Czechia in the quarterfinals and will leave empty-handed.
Placing fifth, and without a medal yet again, certainly falls short of the standard and expectations of a team that has been widely regarded as the class of this tournament for years. It will be back to the drawing board for management in hopes of getting back to the level and success that the Canadian hockey program has established over the course of its history.
