Oxford University Press announced last week that its 2024 word of the year is “brain rot,” reflecting heightened concern about what living our lives in scroll-mode is doing to cognitive function.
It was one of six shortlisted words voted on by 37,000 individuals.
Among the other contenders was “romantasy,” a fusion of romance and fantasy, a book category that has become enormously popular over the past couple of years. Oxford suggests that Booktok, the TikTok space where young (mostly) women discuss the genre, is responsible, adding that “the popularity of the romantasy genre itself could perhaps be linked to an increased appetite for escapism to counteract widespread political and economic gloom.” So an antidote to “brain rot” or simply “brain rot” in another guise? You chose.
This week, Callie Hart’s latest romantasy, “Quicksilver,” debuts at No. 3 on the new fiction list.
And at No. 1 we have “Wind and Truth” by Brandon Sanderson, the fifth book of “The Stormlight Archive,” which marks the end to the first half of Sanderson’s ambitious series. It is not, however, romantasy. Sanderson’s book is categorized as “epic fantasy” or “high fantasy.”
