What’s in a name? If you’re in the midst of a trade war with a once close international partner, then even the name of a doughnut can become a contentious thing.
Luckily, owner Bob Willsey is taking it all in with a smile, as he and the team at the Orillia marketplace turn to social media to help rename their famed Texas doughnuts.
So called for their bigger-than-average nature, Willsey said some customers recently suggested they change the name of the frosted pastry in light of on-again, off-again threat of tariffs from the United States.

He said a Facebook post garnered hundreds of suggestions, including the Nunavut doughnut, the Hoser, Elbows Up, and the Canada is not For Sale doughnut, with other patriotic suggestions involving Terry Fox, as well as Gords Lightfoot and Downie.
Willsey said it’s all tongue-in-cheek.

“So yeah, we had a little bit of fun with that, put it that way. We’re talking about doughnuts. We’re not talking about the most important thing in the world,” he told .
The plan as Willsey explains it, is to rotate through several of the name suggestions each day.

However, Willsey admits that the name will likely revert once international turmoil calms down, as they’ve been making these doughnuts since they opened in ‘87.

“I think everybody will always think of them as Texas doughnuts,” he said.
Willsey says Mariposa Market has always had a focus on sourcing local products, primarily from Ontario but always Canadian, something that has become increasingly important to him and his customers lately.
“I think people these days are they’re kind of, you know, not taking for granted how lucky they are to be in the country,” he said.
