Human remains found last week in the Welland Canal have been identified as those of a 31-year-old Port Colborne man who was reported missing late last year.
Derek Gibbs, 31, a father of three, was reported missing by his mother Dec. 17. He was on his way to her house the day prior.
The red gym bag he was carrying at the time was later discovered by the Welland Canal.

On Dec. 26, family and friends gathered for a vigil at the intersection of Princess and West streets — where the bag was found.
At about 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Niagara Regional Police responded to a call about unidentified human remains in the canal in the area of Highway 140 in Welland.

The NRP forensic services unit was brought in for the investigation, and the office of the chief coroner was notified.

On Sunday, police said the deceased man has been positively identified as Gibbs.
