Ontario’s Ministry of Finance said some cheques were issued in people’s maiden name due to “a technical error.”

“I’ve been married 45.5 years … so Lord knows how this all came to be,” she said. “CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) is indicating that they do have my correct last name.”
Andrew Block, spokesperson for the Royal Bank of Canada, said for individuals with cheques in their maiden name but banking information in their married name, they should contact the government for assistance in updating their information.

As of Feb. 7, approximately 11.76 million rebate payments of the estimated 15 million total been issued, the province confirmed.
Scott Blodgett, spokesperson for Ontario’s Ministry of Finance, said the government is using the most recent tax data available when issuing cheques, as is standard practice for provincial and federal tax payments.
Blodgett said cheques are made payable to and mailed to eligible recipients using the names and addresses on file with the CRA as of October 2024.
“The Ministry of Finance is aware of an issue with some cheques being issued in taxpayer maiden names, and not their current legal name, due to a technical error in the data used to administer payments,” he said.
If a person’s cheque is issued in their maiden name, Blodgett said they should contact Service Ontario as soon as possible at 1-833-351-0409/1-888-821-9056 (TTY).
The ministry said they will cancel the cheque and arrange a replacement cheque within three to four weeks.
The cheques are being mailed to all Ontario residents who are eligible for the taxpayer rebate. To qualify for the rebate, the province says you must have been 18 years or older and a resident in Ontario on Dec. 31, 2023, not be bankrupt or incarcerated in 2024, and have filed a 2023 income tax return by Dec. 31, 2024.
Families who qualify for the Canada Child Benefit payment will also receive a separate cheque totalling $200 for each eligible child under age 18. For example, an eligible family of five with two adults and three children will receive $1,000.

“Ontarians can receive up-to-date information on the status of their cheque through the online account up to three times a day,” the ministry said in a statement.
