Iconic Canadian company Chapman’s Ice Cream is making a stand amid pressures from the additional cost of production caused by the Trump tariffs.
The company’s chief operating officer, Ashley Chapman, called the tariffs “the greatest threat” to Canada’s sovereignty since the Second World War in a recent social media post.
The ongoing trade war sent shock waves through Canadian consumers and other local businesses like Chapman’s, which are now bracing for impact and trying to look for ways to manage their costs.

The family-run business has vowed to absorb increases to the cost of production to maintain its prices at least for the rest of the year.

Founded by David and Penny Chapman in 1973, Markdale-based Chapman’s Ice Cream is believed to be the country’s largest independent ice-cream maker.
“As a proud Canadian-owned and operated company, we want to do our part to support Canadians,” Chapman said. “We will continue to reinforce Canadian-first policies within our operations, because together we are stronger. We will never be the 51st state!”

The company is actively looking internationally for other alternative suppliers of ingredients that are not available within Canada.
