Ontario residents hoping to spend their vacation dollars within Canada this summer have more domestic flight options thanks to new domestic service out of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.
Announced on Tuesday (Feb. 5), Porter Airlines is initiating daily service in June from Hamilton to Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax and Vancouver.
also flies to Winnipeg, Quebec City, Ottawa and St. John’s among its Canadian destinations. The airline also flies to popular U.S. destinations like Las Vegas, Chicago, New York and Boston.
The Canadian airline is adding Hamilton International Airport as one of its Canadian hubs this year.
Porter CEO Michael Deluce said the airline saw an opportunity to expand its North American network with the Hamilton expansion. Porter is also considering adding additional routes from the steel city.
“The Porter experience is something that travellers in Hamilton have never seen before,” Deluce said in a news release. “Our team takes great pride in delivering amenities that make flying something to look forward to and doing so with an emphasis on care and service.”
Hamilton Liberal MP Lisa Hepfner noted Porter joins Play, Sunwing and WestJet as airlines providing domestic and international service out of Hamilton.
“We are thrilled to welcome @porterairlines to Hamilton!” Hepfner said on X, formerly Twitter.
In announcing the Porter expansion, Hamilton airport officials noted air passenger services have recently expanded, thanks to terminal upgrades by TradePort International Corporation, a subsidiary of Vantage Group, which manages the airport through a 49-year lease agreement with the City of Hamilton.
Under a newly renewed lease, efforts to expand air service and conduct further terminal upgrades will begin immediately, airport officials added in the release.
Airport enhancements will include upgrades of terminal interiors from check-in counters and passenger screening areas to gate seating and baggage claim.
Future enhancements will include passenger jet bridges to connect the terminal directly to aircraft — a first for Hamilton International — and terminal infrastructure upgrades to position the airport for future growth.
Cole Horncastle, executive managing director, of Hamilton International Airport, said Porter is known for its elevated economy service and convenient, stress-free service.
“I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Porter Airlines to Hamilton’s John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport and to see Vantage Group’s continued investment to enhance passenger facilities. This is a major win for the City of Hamilton and will significantly transform our airport’s passenger service offerings,” he said.
